Childbirth, weight loss, and aging can all cause excess skin and fat on the abdomen. When this occurs, a tummy tuck can help to restore a tighter abdominal profile. However, many people may not be aware that there are multiple types of tummy tucks. At our office in Baltimore, we offer full and mini tummy tucks to meet the needs of many patients. Read on to learn more about these two procedures, and who can benefit from each.
Full Tummy Tuck
The full tummy tuck is also known as the traditional tummy tuck and is the most commonly performed tummy tuck procedure. During surgery, an incision is created between the hip bones and excess fat and skin are removed. Weakened and separated abdominal muscles are restored as well. The belly button may need to be relocated depending on the amount of excess skin removed. Recovery is around two weeks, and patients can enjoy a slimmer, tighter abdominal profile.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck is performed on those who have a minimal amount of excess skin and fat on the abdomen. Unlike a full tummy tuck, this procedure only treats the area below the belly button. An incision is still created between the hip bones, though it may be shorter than that of a full tummy tuck. Excess fat is removed and muscles are tightened. Because it is less invasive than a full tummy tuck, recovery time is shorter.
Both tummy tuck techniques can also be combined with liposuction to further sculpt the body for optimal results. Because each person’s anatomy and surgical goals are different, meeting with Dr. Rosenberg for a tummy tuck consultation is needed.
