Very similar to Botox®, Dysport® is a new wrinkle relaxer approved to treat forehead wrinkles and frown lines. In 2008, Botox® was the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the United States according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Dysport is approved to treat wrinkles in 23 countries and is now approved in the U.S.
Dysport® is an injectable form of botulinum toxin Type A, like Botox®. It blocks the nerve impulses that cause your facial muscles to contract and form lines. The ingredient is a neurotoxin, but the amount is so incredibly small that it’s considered non-toxic. It relaxes facial muscles and allows unsightly lines and wrinkles to flatten out.
The primary difference between the two is that Dysport® has shown it works within one to two days where Botox® takes three to five. This rapid response is appealing to someone who wants to improve their appearance before a social event or meeting. Some studies have shown that Dysport® injections may keep wrinkles at bay for six months to one year, as opposed to the approximate three month timeframe with Botox®.
Facial movements such as frowning or squinting can create frown lines, so they may develop even in younger adults. Dysport® is used to treat moderate to severe frown lines in adult patients less than 65 years of age.
Potential side effects of Dysport® are similar to Botox®. They include local numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection. Placing ice on the injection site before and after the procedure can reduce side effects.
The Dysport® procedure usually takes about 15 minutes. When the effects begin to fade, you can return for a follow-up treatment.
Selecting the correct injection points is critical to the success of the procedure. At the Plastic Surgery Center of Maryland, we offer Dysport® and Botox® injections for the non-surgical treatment of wrinkles. Our doctors can help you determine if Dysport is the right treatment option for you based on the condition of your skin and your personal goals.
