Breast Reduction: What to Know

Large breasts are deemed to be desirable in society. However, many women with overly large breasts deal with medical issues like chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain as well as nerve pain and skin irritation. Along with these physical ailments, women with large breasts may feel self-conscious and limit exercise due to depression or an inability to work out comfortably. If this sounds like you, talk to Dr. Rosenberg at his Maryland practice about breast reduction.

What is Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction is exactly what it sounds like, it decreases the breast size. This surgery removes skin, fat, and tissue from the breasts to make them smaller. Reduced breast size can improve self-confidence as well as reduce pain attributed to large breasts. During the surgery, you will be put under general anesthesia for comfort. Dr. Rosenberg will make an incision around the areola. Through this incision, he will remove the excess fat, skin, and tissue while repositioning the breasts. The areola size can also be reduced to be more proportionate to the new breasts.

How Does Breast Reduction Differ from Other Breast Procedures?

When you wish to reduce or alter your breasts there are different options for breast procedures. Breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction are all possibilities. But these three surgeries have different purposes.

Breast Augmentation

This surgery increases the size of the breasts and improves contours by inserting implants under the breasts. It is done for women who wish for larger, shapelier breasts. This procedure is typically only done for cosmetic reasons unless part of reconstruction surgery for women who have undergone breast cancer surgery.

Breast Lift

Breast lift is another option of reducing the size of the breasts. Over time, breasts can start to sag, this is when a breast lift would be beneficial. This surgery removes excess tissue to lift the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. It will not always produce a major change in breast size. Breast lifts are generally undergone for cosmetic reasons.

Breast Reduction

The breast reduction is the most beneficial option if you have overly large breasts. This will make the breasts smaller, to a more comfortable size. A breast reduction can be done for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

If you are unable to perform physical activity, experience pain, and have skin irritation due to large breasts then you are most likely a candidate for this surgery. Ideal candidates should be healthy individuals who are nonsmokers. The best way to know if a breast reduction can benefit you is by speaking with Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg at his Maryland office.
