Choosing the Type of Breast Implant That Is Right for You

There are two primary types of breast implants and Dr. Rosenberg offers both silicone and saline.

Saline Implants vs. Silicone Implants

This is usually a patient’s first consideration after implant size. During your initial consultation, Dr. Rosenberg can review the options, your individual anatomy, and appearance goals with you to find the right solution.

Below is a chart with the main features of both types of breast implants for your comparison.

Feature Saline Implants Silicone Implants
Filling sterile saline (salt water) silicone cohesive gel
Safety FDA approved FDA approved
Feel Soft with a slightly firmer feel than silicone gel smoother, softer and feel more like natural breast tissue
Outer Shell smooth and textured shells smooth and textured shells
Shape Vestibulum lacinia
Projection Moderate, Moderate Plus and High Profile Moderate, Moderate Plus and High Profile
Size Can be filled during surgery A set fill volume, predetermined before surgery

In addition to choosing your breast implant filling, there are also several options including smooth versus textured and round versus contoured or teardrop. The choice depends on many factors including price, your anatomy, and your desired outcome for breast augmentation.

Smooth Implants vs. Textured Implants

Breast implants with a smooth outer shell offer many benefits. First, the smooth shell is thinner than the textured shell, so it feels softer and more natural. In addition, the smooth implants move around more during activity—mimicking the movement of a natural breast.

Smooth implants are also often referred to as smooth, round implants because implants with smooth outer shells have to be round (versus teardrop shape implants).

Textured implants have a thicker shell that feels a bit like sandpaper. When filled, these implants end up having a firmer feel than smooth implants due to the thicker shell.

Textured implants have a teardrop shape as opposed to a round shape. The reason that teardrop shape implants need to have a textured shell is because this helps them stick to your breast tissue—preventing implant rotation. With a round shape, implant rotation doesn’t matter since it looks the same from every angle.

Choosing a Breast Implant Size

When deciding which size breast implants are right for you, you will want to consider the proportions of your body, shoulder and hip width, height, weight, and your current breast size.

During your free consultation at The Plastic Surgery Center in Maryland, you will be able to “try on” different implant sizes, see different implant profiles, and browse through pictures to help you select the best size for your body.
